Mother Hancie Lee Lacking-McCray

Mrs. Hancie L. McCray,101, of McComb, MS departed this earthly life on Monday, September 23, 2024, at her residence in McComb, MS. 4:00pm-7:00pm Visitation Friday, October 4, 2024, New Home Missionary Baptist Church; Service 1:00pm Saturday, October 5, 2024, New Home MB Church Pastor Alfred Austin; Supt. Speady Ross Officiating. Interment following in The Rose Bower MB Church Cemetery. Mother Hancie Lee Lacking McCray was born on Saturday, April 21, 1923, to Hance and Vetta Adams- Lacking. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Bishop LC McCray Sr. Three sons: Hance, Leroy, and Jerry McCray; one daughter, Shirley Ann McCray-Kenny; four sisters, Mae Frances Thompson, Avis Carter, Carrie Lee Stewart, and Lela Pearl Lacking; and four brothers: JB Lacking, James “Buster” Lacking, and Jethro “Pedro” Lacking. She was united in holy matrimony to LC McCray Sr. on December 24, 1939, and to this union, 13 children were conceived, but eight survived. They were blessed with 21 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren, and 14 great-great grandchildren. Mother Hancie is the definition of a hard worker, as she started her work experience at the age of 13 in the Cottonfields alongside her other siblings and still was able to get her education in the Amite County Public School. She was smart and wise growing up, and as an adult, she stressed to her children about good work, ethics, Mother Hancie McCray was very active and held a strong disposition in her community. In other words, she said what she meant, and she meant what she said. She was first Lady of Martin Chapel COGI for many years with Grace and impeccable style, serving with her husband after his retirement. She joined Martin Temple, where she served as assistant secretary, in the kitchen ministry, and in any other way to help the church. Mother Hancie loved to travel to help care for her grandchildren; She worked in the food service industry as a chef for many years in hotel restaurants, mainly Holiday Inn, she also worked as a caregiver for home aid for the elderly. Mother Hancie was a hard worker up to her 90s when she decided it was time to slow down. She continued to care for herself and as a caregiver for her husband until his death in 2007. She is known for her cooking and love for family and friends to get their feel of good eats. Her specialties were homemade cakes and pies. Her hobbies include sewing and making quilts. She leaves to cherish her memories with three daughters: Gloria McCray-Gilmore (Keith), Tina M. McCray-Allen (Jesse), Sierra Beime, and one son L.C McCray, Jr. and one daughter-in-law Vanetta McCray. 21 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren, and 14 great-great grandchildren.
